Le Goûter

An Après-Ski Ritual, the French Way

Zannier Le Chalet, Megève, France - Beautiful tart to accompany the daily afternoon tea

In France, four o’clock has always meant one thing: le goûter. The beloved afternoon snack of childhood – usually composed of a slice of brioche with jam or a square of chocolate tucked into a warm baguette – is an after-school ritual the French never quite outgrow. It is less a snack than a pause: a moment claimed from the day, sweet and unhurried, best shared when the days turn cold and the light turns low.

Zannier Le Chalet, Megève, France - Chef preparing daily afternoon tea on a winters day

At Zannier Le Chalet, this national tradition finds its most beautiful setting. Each afternoon from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the lounge bar welcomes guests to an intimate après-ski moment beside its open fireplace, and becomes the stage for le goûter, alpine style.

The experience unfolds around a selection of homemade pastries – three to four freshly baked choices, changing daily – accompanied by a choice of hot beverages, served beside the open fireplace, on deep sofas, with the Mont Blanc mountains and the village of Megève spread out beyond the windows. During the festive season, the glow of the Christmas tree lights add a touch of enchantment.

The table is simple and generous, as a proper goûter should be: homemade pastries prepared fresh each day, and a careful selection of hot drinks – including organic teas and herbal infusions from The Tea Artisans, coffees to suit every taste, from a classic espresso to a frothy cappuccino, or a velvety hot chocolate for those with a sweet tooth.

After a day on the slopes, it is the ideal après-ski pause: a quiet, unhurried hour to warm up slowly, letting the silence of the surroundings settle in, as the fire crackles and the mountains fade into dusk.

This daily ritual is complimentary for resident guests, and priced at €25 for outside visitors – a gentle invitation to slow down in Megève and savour the sweetest hour of the afternoon.
